Discussion on Politics

A supporter of Kamala Harris claims that Joe Biden did not keep a promise during an interview with Senator Laphonza Butler, who is a Democrat from California, in her last week serving in the Senate.

Authored by Lisa Lerer

Laphonza Butler has only been a senator in California for a short period of 15 months. However, she has been a trusted friend and supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris for a much longer period of 15 years.

This week, I had a conversation with Butler, who has been in a long-term partnership with Harris since they first met when Butler was a union leader in Los Angeles. This partnership gives her a unique viewpoint on why their political party lost the presidential election and how they can work on rebuilding it.

Harris has not discussed in detail the reasons for her loss in public. According to Butler, part of the blame lies with President Biden, who she feels went back on his promise by seeking re-election. However, simply pointing fingers at Biden is not sufficient. Democrats need to shift from talking to actively listening, according to her.

Governor Gavin Newsom selected Butler to take over Senator Dianne Feinstein’s vacant U.S. Senate seat after her passing in September 2023. Since Feinstein chose not to seek re-election, this week marks her final days in office. On Monday, Representative Adam Schiff will be officially sworn in as California’s newest senator.

The interview was shortened and made clearer for easier understanding.

LL: What do you believe was the reason for Harris’ loss

Many Americans desired a change and were looking for a candidate who they believed embodied that change. It seems that this desire for change may have been the driving force behind their decision.

Was it a mistake for Biden to run for

President Biden initially stated that he would be a transitional leader, which was the expectation people had. It may have been better for him to stick to that plan. Despite the success of his presidency, it is likely to be seen as one of the most impactful in history. However, once expectations are set, it is important to follow through on them.
