In the world of politics, a close associate of Vice President Kamala Harris has accused President Joe Biden of not keeping his word. Senator Laphonza Butler, a Democrat from California, gave an interview in her last week serving in the Senate.
Written by Lisa Lerer
Laphonza Butler has been a senator representing California for a short period of time, approximately 15 months. However, she has been a strong supporter and friend of Vice President Kamala Harris for 15 years.
This week, I had a conversation with Butler, who has had a long working relationship with Harris. They first crossed paths when Butler was a union leader in Los Angeles. This partnership gives her a unique viewpoint on why their political party lost the presidential election and what steps can be taken to rebuild and move forward.
Harris has not provided many public explanations for her loss. Butler believes that part of the blame lies with President Biden, as he went back on his campaign promise by running for re-election. However, Butler emphasizes that simply blaming Biden is not sufficient – Democrats need to shift their focus from talking to actively listening and understanding.
Governor Gavin Newsom selected Butler to take over the U.S. Senate seat that became vacant after Senator Dianne Feinstein passed away in September 2023. Feinstein chose not to run for another term, so this week marks her final days in the Senate. On Monday, Representative Adam Schiff will officially become California’s newest senator.
The interview was altered to make it shorter and easier to understand.

At first, President Biden indicated he would only serve as a transitional leader, which was the expectation many had. It may have been better for him to stick to that plan. Despite the success of his presidency, it will likely be seen as one of the most influential in my lifetime. When you set expectations with people, it’s important to follow through on them.
