Discussion on Politics

A supporter of Kamala Harris claims that Joe Biden did not keep his word. In an interview with Senator Laphonza Butler, a member of the Democratic Party from California, conducted in her last week in the Senate.

Written by Lisa Lerer

Laphonza Butler has only been a senator from California for around 15 months, but she has been a strong supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris for 15 years.

This week, I interviewed Butler, who has had a longstanding collaboration with Harris. They first crossed paths when Butler was involved in a union in Los Angeles. This partnership provides her with a unique viewpoint on the reasons behind her party’s loss in the presidential election and potential strategies for rebuilding.

Harris has not discussed in detail the reasons for her loss. According to Butler, part of the blame lies with President Biden, who she believes went back on a clear campaign pledge by running for re-election. However, simply pointing fingers at Biden is not sufficient. Democrats, she argues, need to shift from talking to truly listening and understanding.

Governor Gavin Newsom selected Butler to take over the U.S. Senate position that became vacant after Senator Dianne Feinstein passed away in September 2023. Feinstein opted not to seek re-election, so this week marks her final days in office. Representative Adam Schiff will officially become the state’s newest senator when he is sworn in on Monday.

The interview was shortened and made clearer for easier understanding.

LL: What is your opinion on why Harris didn’t win?

LB: The citizens of America were seeking something different. They desired a candidate who embodied change. That seems to be the primary reason for their choice.

Was it a mistake for Biden to run for

At first, President Biden indicated that he would be a temporary leader, which was what many people were anticipating. It might have been more beneficial for him to stick to that plan. Despite this, we cannot ignore the achievements of his time in office. Looking back, his presidency will be remembered as one of the most significant in my lifetime. However, setting expectations with the public means that it is important to follow through on them.
