Regarding Politics

A supporter of Harris claims that Biden did not keep his word, according to an interview with Senator Laphonza Butler, who is a Democrat from California, conducted in her last week in the Senate.

Written by Lisa Lerer

Laphonza Butler has been in the role of a California senator for approximately 15 months. However, she has been a strong supporter and friend of Vice President Kamala Harris for the past 15 years.

This week, I had a conversation with Butler, who has been in a long partnership with Harris since they first met when Butler was a union leader in Los Angeles. This partnership gives her a unique insight into why her party lost the presidential election and what steps it can take to recover.

Harris has not publicly discussed the reasons for her loss. According to Butler, part of the blame lies with President Biden, who she feels went back on a clear campaign promise by running for re-election. However, simply blaming Biden is not sufficient. Democrats need to shift from talking to actively listening and understanding.

Gov. Gavin Newsom chose Butler to take over the U.S. Senate position previously held by Senator Dianne Feinstein, who passed away in September 2023. As Feinstein chose not to seek re-election, this week marks her final days in office. On Monday, Representative Adam Schiff will officially become the state’s newest senator.

The interview was shortened and made clearer for easier understanding.

LL is asking for your opinion on why you believe Harris lost.

Liz believes that the American people desired a different direction and were looking for a candidate who embodied that change. She believes that this is a key reason for the outcome of the election.

Was it a bad decision for Biden to run

When President Biden first took office, he implied that he would only serve as a temporary leader. Many people expected him to fulfill that promise. Looking at his presidency so far, it has been undeniably successful. In the future, his time in office will likely be remembered as one of the most influential in recent history. However, it may have been better for him to stick to his original plan of being a transitional leader, as setting expectations and not meeting them can be problematic.
