Discussion on Politics
In an interview with Senator Laphonza Butler, a Democrat from California, it was revealed that a promise made by Biden was broken. This interview took place during her last week in the Senate.
Written by Lisa Lerer
Laphonza Butler has been a senator representing California for around 15 months, despite having a longstanding friendship and alliance with Vice President Kamala Harris for 15 years.
I recently had a conversation with Butler, who has been partners with Harris for a long time. They first met when Butler was working as a union leader in Los Angeles. Butler’s unique perspective sheds light on why their party lost the presidential election and offers insight on how they can work towards rebuilding.
Harris has not discussed in detail the reasons for her loss. According to Butler, the blame partially lies with President Biden for breaking a campaign promise by seeking re-election. However, simply pointing fingers at Biden is not sufficient. Democrats need to shift their approach from talking to actively listening and understanding.
Governor Gavin Newsom chose Butler to take over the U.S. Senate position that became vacant after Senator Dianne Feinstein passed away in September 2023. Since Feinstein opted not to seek re-election, this week marks her final days in office. On Monday, Representative Adam Schiff will officially become the newest senator from the state.
The interview was shortened and made clearer through editing.
LL is asking for the reasons behind Harris’ loss.
LB: The public in America desired a shift in leadership. They were seeking a candidate who embodied the idea of change. I believe that is the primary reason for the outcome.
Was it a mistake for Biden to run for
When President Biden first took office, he indicated that he would be a transitional leader, which is what people were expecting. It may have been better for him to stick to that plan. Despite the success of his presidency, it will be remembered as one of the most influential in my lifetime. However, once expectations are set, it is important to follow through on them.
