Discussing political matters, a supporter of Kamala Harris claimed that Joe Biden did not keep a promise. Senator Laphonza Butler, a Democrat from California, spoke in an interview during her last week in the Senate.

Even though Laphonza Butler will have only been a senator from California for a short period of time, she has been a strong supporter and friend of Vice President Kamala Harris for 15 years.

During the week, I had a conversation with Butler, who has been in a longstanding partnership with Harris. They first crossed paths when Butler was working as a union leader in Los Angeles. This partnership provides Butler with a unique viewpoint on the reasons behind her party’s loss in the presidential election and the potential strategies for rebuilding.

Harris has not spoken extensively about the reasons for her loss. According to Butler, part of the blame lies with President Biden, who she believes went back on his campaign promise by running for re-election. However, merely faulting Biden is not sufficient, as Democrats need to shift from talking to actively listening and understanding.

Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Butler to take over the vacant U.S. Senate seat left by the late Senator Dianne Feinstein in September 2023. Since Feinstein chose not to seek re-election, this week marks her final days in office. On Monday, Representative Adam Schiff will be officially sworn in as the new senator representing the state.

The interview was shortened and made clearer for easier understanding.

LL: What do you believe was the reason for Harris’s loss

The American public desired a shift in leadership and sought a candidate they believed could bring about change. It seems that this desire for change was a key factor in their decision-making process.

Was it a mistake for Biden to run for

President Biden originally stated that he would act as a transitional leader, which was the expectation of many. Therefore, it may have been better for him to continue in that role. Despite the success of his presidency, it will be remembered as one of the most influential in my lifetime. It is important to maintain the expectations set with the people.
