Kelly Loeffler, a former Georgia senator and major contributor to President-elect Donald J. Trump’s 2024 campaign, was selected to lead the Small Business Administration.

In a post on Truth Social, Mr. Trump stated that Kelly will use her knowledge of business and Washington to decrease bureaucratic hurdles and create more opportunities for small businesses to expand, be creative, and succeed. He also mentioned that she will prioritize making sure the SBA is responsible to taxpayers by combating inefficiency, dishonesty, and excessive regulations.

Ms. Loeffler does not have much background in working in government. She was chosen by Gov. Brian Kemp to take over a Senate seat in Georgia in early 2020, but she lost in a special election to Rev. Raphael Warnock in January 2021. Towards the end of her time in the Senate, Ms. Loeffler was heavily involved in supporting Mr. Trump’s attempt to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election.

During the first Trump administration, Ms. Loeffler experienced a noticeable shift in her political views. Initially perceived as a moderate Republican focused on business interests, her appointment to the Senate was seen as an attempt to broaden the appeal of the Georgia Republican Party.

However, Ms. Loeffler changed her political stance drastically to align with Mr. Trump, in hopes of securing her seat in the 2020 election. Despite this, Mr. Warnock ended up winning the runoff election by a margin of two percentage points.

Should she be approved by the Senate, Ms. Loeffler would be in charge of overseeing an agency that provides significant financial support in the form of loans and disaster assistance to small businesses nationwide. The Small Business Administration (S.B.A.) was instrumental in supporting businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic by distributing billions of dollars to help them stay operational and maintain their workforce.
