Kelly Loeffler, who was a major contributor to Donald J. Trump’s 2024 campaign and previously served as a senator in Georgia, has been selected by President-elect Trump to lead the Small Business Administration.
In a post on Truth Social, Mr. Trump expressed that Kelly will use her background in business and Washington to decrease bureaucratic obstacles and create more opportunities for Small Businesses to expand, be creative, and succeed. He mentioned that she will prioritize making sure the Small Business Administration is transparent and efficient by addressing issues like wasteful spending, fraud, and excessive regulations.
Ms. Loeffler lacks extensive experience in government work. She was assigned to take over a Senate seat in Georgia by Gov. Brian Kemp, starting in early 2020 until she lost in a special election to Rev. Raphael Warnock in January 2021. Towards the end of her time in the Senate, Ms. Loeffler was actively involved in supporting Mr. Trump’s campaign to challenge his loss in the 2020 presidential election.
During the first Trump administration, Ms. Loeffler experienced a notable change in her political views. Initially considered a moderate Republican focused on business, her Senate appointment was seen as an attempt to make the Georgia Republican Party more attractive to a broader audience.
However, Ms. Loeffler took a strong conservative stance during her time in office, aligning herself closely with Mr. Trump in order to secure her position in the 2020 election. Despite her efforts, Mr. Warnock ended up winning the runoff election by a margin of two percentage points.
If the Senate approves her nomination, Ms. Loeffler will be in charge of overseeing an agency that provides loans and disaster assistance to small businesses nationwide. The S.B.A. was instrumental in providing financial support during the Covid-19 crisis, distributing billions of dollars to help businesses survive and maintain their workforce.
