The incoming President, Donald J. Trump, selected Kelly Loeffler, who was a major contributor to his 2024 campaign and previously served as a senator in Georgia, to lead the Small Business Administration.
Mr. Trump announced on Truth Social that Kelly will use her background in business and government to decrease bureaucratic obstacles and create more chances for small businesses to expand, come up with new ideas, and succeed. He mentioned that she will make sure that the Small Business Administration is responsible to taxpayers by addressing issues of inefficiency, dishonesty, and excessive regulations.
Ms. Loeffler has limited background in working in the government. She was chosen by Gov. Brian Kemp to take over a Senate position in Georgia in early 2020. However, she lost in a special election to Rev. Raphael Warnock in January 2021. Towards the end of her time in the Senate, Ms. Loeffler was actively involved in supporting Mr. Trump’s attempts to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election.
During the first Trump administration, Ms. Loeffler went through a major shift in her political views. Initially seen as a moderate Republican focused on business, her appointment to the Senate was thought to be a way to broaden the appeal of the Georgia Republican Party.
Ms. Loeffler changed her stance significantly while in office, presenting herself as a strong advocate for and loyal follower of Mr. Trump as she geared up to campaign for her seat in the 2020 election. Ultimately, Mr. Warnock emerged victorious with a two percentage point lead in the runoff election.
Should she be approved by the Senate, Ms. Loeffler would be in charge of overseeing the distribution of loans and disaster aid to small businesses nationwide. The Small Business Administration was instrumental in providing financial support during the Covid-19 crisis, ensuring businesses could remain operational and keep their employees on payroll by distributing billions of dollars in assistance.
