President-elect Donald J. Trump announced on Wednesday his intention to nominate Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, to be in charge of the Internal Revenue Service. This decision implies that Trump plans to remove the current leader of the IRS, who was appointed by Biden.

Following his defeat in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long has promoted a tax credit introduced during the pandemic that has been plagued by fraudulent activity, resulting in the government incurring billions of dollars more in costs than anticipated. In response, lawmakers have attempted to cancel the tax credit and the I.R.S. has temporarily halted the processing of claims in order to identify and eliminate false applications for the tax break.

During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about his efforts in assisting businesses in obtaining the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that up until that point, the tax agency had not rejected any of the claims made by him and his team. The credit was established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020 as a way to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees during the economic crisis.

He explained that they don’t sneak anyone through the process, but rather ensure that individuals truly qualify for the refund from the IRS along with any interest owed to them.

President Trump made a new selection for a position within the IRS, which was shared on his social media platform. This decision could significantly impact the IRS during a critical time. The Biden administration has invested large sums of money into updating the agency and strengthening its tax collection initiatives to enhance customer service and combat tax evasion.

President Biden selected Daniel Werfel in 2022 to oversee the restructuring of the IRS. Werfel is a former management consultant with experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations. His term as leader of the IRS was scheduled to continue until 2027.
