President-elect Donald J. Trump announced on Wednesday that he plans to appoint Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, as the head of the Internal Revenue Service. This move indicates his intention to remove the current leader of the IRS, who was appointed by President Biden.
Following his defeat in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long has promoted a tax credit designed for the pandemic, which has been heavily impacted by fraud and has ended up costing the government much more than originally anticipated. In an effort to address this issue, lawmakers have attempted to eliminate the tax credit, and the I.R.S. has temporarily halted the processing of claims to identify and eliminate false applications for the tax break.
During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about how he assists businesses in claiming the Employee Retention Tax Credit, which was established by Congress and Mr. Trump in 2020. This credit was designed to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees amidst the economic shutdown. Mr. Long mentioned that he and his team have not had any claims denied by the tax agency so far.
He emphasized that they do not try to deceive anyone by sneaking them through, but rather thoroughly verify that they are eligible for the refund from the I.R.S. along with interest.
President Trump made a new selection for a key position within the IRS and announced it on his social media platform. This decision would bring significant changes to the IRS at a crucial time. The Biden administration has invested a substantial amount of money into updating the agency and strengthening its efforts to collect taxes. This investment is aimed at enhancing customer service and combating tax evasion.
President Biden selected Daniel Werfel in 2022 to head the I.R.S. overhaul. Werfel, a former management consultant and civil servant with experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations, was appointed to serve until 2027.
