Donald J. Trump, who will soon become President, announced on Wednesday that he plans to appoint Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, to be in charge of the Internal Revenue Service. This essentially means that he intends to remove the current leader of the IRS, who was appointed by Biden.
After being unsuccessful in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long has promoted a tax credit introduced during the pandemic that has been significantly affected by fraudulent activities, causing the government to incur billions more in costs than initially anticipated. In response, lawmakers have made efforts to eliminate the tax credit, and the IRS has temporarily halted the processing of claims to investigate and prevent false applications for the tax break.
During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about his efforts in assisting businesses in obtaining the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that neither he nor his colleagues had experienced any rejections from the tax agency for their claims. This tax credit program was established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020 as a way to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees amidst the economic downturn caused by the pandemic.
He stated that they do not sneak anyone through and take measures to ensure that they legitimately qualify for the refund with interest from the IRS.
Donald Trump has made a new selection for a key position in the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which was announced on his social media platform. This decision is significant as it comes at a crucial time for the IRS. The current administration, led by Joe Biden, has invested a substantial amount of money into updating the agency and strengthening its efforts to collect taxes. This investment is aimed at enhancing customer satisfaction and combating tax evasion.
President Biden appointed Daniel Werfel, a previous management consultant and government employee with experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations, to head the restructuring of the IRS in 2022. Werfel was expected to serve in this role until 2027.
