President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his intention to nominate Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, to be the new head of the Internal Revenue Service. This decision essentially means that Trump plans to remove the current leader, who was appointed by Biden.
Following his defeat in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long has been promoting a tax credit created during the pandemic, which has been plagued by fraud and has ended up costing the government billions more than originally anticipated. Lawmakers have made efforts to eliminate the tax credit, and the I.R.S. has temporarily halted the processing of claims in order to identify and reject fraudulent applications for the tax break.
During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about how he assists businesses in obtaining the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that he and his team have not had any of their claims denied by the tax agency so far. The program was established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020 as a way to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees during the economic shutdown.
He explained that they don’t allow anyone to cheat the system, but instead ensure that they meet the qualifications for receiving a refund from the IRS along with interest on their own money.
Donald Trump’s recent decision, shared on his social media platform, will bring significant change to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) at a crucial time. The current administration, led by Joe Biden, has invested large sums of money into updating the agency and strengthening its efforts to collect taxes. The goal is to enhance customer service and combat tax evasion.
President Biden selected Daniel Werfel in 2022 to head the restructuring of the IRS. Werfel, a former management consultant and civil servant with experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations, was appointed to the position until 2027.
