Writing from the capital
President-elect Donald J. Trump announced on Wednesday his intention to appoint Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, as the new head of the Internal Revenue Service. This would mean that the current leader, who was appointed by President Biden, would be removed from their position.
Following his defeat in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long has promoted a tax credit created during the pandemic that has been plagued by fraudulent claims, resulting in the government spending billions more than anticipated. Lawmakers have made efforts to eliminate the tax credit, with the IRS halting the processing of claims temporarily in order to identify and reject false applications.
During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about how he assists businesses in claiming the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that he and his team have not had any claims denied by the tax agency. This credit was established in 2020 by Congress and former President Trump as a way to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees during the economic shutdown.
"We don’t help anyone cheat the system," he explained. "We ensure that they meet the requirements to receive a refund from the I.R.S. with added interest."
Donald Trump has made a new selection for a position within the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which was shared on his social media platform. This decision has the potential to significantly impact the IRS at a crucial time. The Biden administration has invested a substantial amount of money into updating the agency and strengthening its enforcement of tax laws to enhance customer service and combat tax evasion.
President Biden selected Daniel Werfel in 2022 to be in charge of reforming the I.R.S. Werfel had experience working as a management consultant and civil servant in both Democratic and Republican administrations. He was expected to remain in this role until 2027.
