Former Missouri congressman Billy Long has been chosen by Trump to lead the IRS. Long, who served six terms in Congress, has been assisting businesses in claiming a tax credit during the pandemic that has experienced widespread fraud and ended up costing the government more money than expected.

On Wednesday, President-elect Donald J. Trump announced that he plans to nominate Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, to be in charge of the Internal Revenue Service. This decision indicates his intention to dismiss the current leader of the tax agency, who was appointed by President Biden.

After losing a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long has promoted a pandemic-era tax credit that has been heavily affected by fraud and has ended up costing the government billions more than originally anticipated. Legislators have attempted to eliminate the tax credit and the I.R.S. has temporarily halted processing claims in order to identify and eliminate fraudulent applications for the tax break.

During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about his efforts in assisting businesses in claiming the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that so far, the tax agency has not rejected any of their claims. This program was established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020 to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees during the economic shutdown.

"We do not try to deceive anyone by qualifying them for a refund from the IRS with interest that they are not eligible for," he stated.

Donald Trump has announced his selection for a key position in the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) through his social media platform. This decision comes at a crucial time as the Biden administration has invested significant resources into updating the agency and enhancing its tax collection initiatives to enhance customer service and combat tax evasion.

President Biden selected Daniel Werfel in 2022 to head the restructuring of the I.R.S. Werfel, who had previous experience as a management consultant and civil servant in both Democratic and Republican administrations, was appointed to serve until 2027.
