On Wednesday, President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his intention to nominate Billy Long, a former Missouri congressman, as the new head of the Internal Revenue Service. This decision implies that Trump plans to remove the current IRS leader, who was appointed by President Biden.

Following his loss in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long has promoted a tax credit created during the pandemic that has been plagued by fraud, leading to billions of dollars in unexpected costs for the government. In response, lawmakers have attempted to eliminate the tax credit, and the I.R.S. has taken steps such as temporarily halting the processing of claims to identify and reject fraudulent applications for the tax break.

During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about how he assists businesses in obtaining the Employee Retention Tax Credit, which has not been denied by the tax agency yet. This credit was established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020 to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees during the economic shutdown.

He stated that they don’t allow anyone to cheat the system and make sure that individuals truly qualify for the refund from the IRS, along with any interest owed.

Donald Trump has selected a new leader for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which could have a significant impact on the agency at a crucial time. The current administration has invested a large amount of money in updating the IRS and increasing its efforts to collect taxes, with a focus on enhancing customer service and addressing tax evasion.

President Biden appointed Daniel Werfel in 2022 to head the restructuring of the I.R.S. Werfel, a former consultant and government official with experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations, was selected to lead the agency until 2027.
