Former congressman Billy Long, who represented Missouri for six terms, has been chosen by Trump to lead the IRS. Long has been involved in assisting businesses in claiming a tax credit meant for pandemic relief, which has seen widespread fraud and ended up costing the government significantly more than expected.

Reporting from the nation
On Wednesday, President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his intention to nominate Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, to be the head of the Internal Revenue Service. This decision indicates that Trump plans to remove the current IRS leader, who was appointed by President Biden.
Following his loss in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long promoted a tax credit introduced during the pandemic that has been plagued by fraudulent claims, leading to a much higher cost to the government than originally estimated. In response, lawmakers have made efforts to eliminate the tax credit, and the I.R.S. has temporarily halted the processing of claims to investigate and prevent false applications.
During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about how he and his team have been successful in assisting businesses with claiming the Employee Retention Tax Credit. This credit, established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020, aims to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees during times of economic hardship. Mr. Long mentioned that they have not faced any rejections from the tax agency for claims made so far.
"We do not allow anyone to bypass the process. We ensure that they meet the requirements to receive a refund from the IRS, along with any interest owed."
Donald Trump made a surprising decision to appoint a new leader for the IRS, which comes at a crucial time. The Biden administration has invested a significant amount of money into updating the agency and strengthening its ability to collect taxes, with the goal of enhancing customer service and combating tax evasion.
During the year 2022, President Biden selected Daniel Werfel, a previous management consultant and government employee with experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations, to be in charge of restructuring the I.R.S. Werfel’s term was scheduled to continue until 2027.
