Former Missouri Congressman Billy Long has been chosen by Trump to lead the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Long, who served six terms in Congress, has been assisting businesses in claiming a tax credit during the pandemic. This tax credit has faced issues with fraud and has ended up costing the government more money than originally expected.

On Wednesday, President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his intention to nominate Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, to take over as the head of the Internal Revenue Service. This move indicates Trump’s plan to remove the current leader, who was appointed by Biden.

Following his defeat in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long promoted a tax credit introduced during the pandemic that has been plagued by fraudulent claims, resulting in the government facing unexpected costs in the billions. In an effort to address this issue, lawmakers have attempted to eliminate the tax credit, and the I.R.S. has temporarily ceased processing claims to identify and reject false applications.

During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about his experience assisting businesses in claiming the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that neither he nor his colleagues had encountered any denials from the tax agency for their claims. The program was established in 2020 by Congress and former President Trump to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees amidst the economic shutdown.

He stated that they do not cheat or deceive anyone in getting a refund from the IRS, but rather ensure that individuals legitimately qualify for it with interest.

President Trump made a surprising announcement on his social media platform about his selection for a key position at the I.R.S. This decision comes at a crucial time, as the Biden administration has recently invested a significant amount of money into updating the agency and strengthening its tax collection activities. Their goal is to enhance customer service and combat tax evasion more effectively.

President Biden appointed Daniel Werfel in 2022 to spearhead the transformation of the IRS. Werfel, a seasoned management consultant and civil servant with experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations, was chosen for the role. His term was expected to continue until 2027.
