Former Missouri congressman Billy Long has been chosen by Trump to lead the IRS. Long, who served six terms in Congress, has been assisting businesses in claiming a tax credit during the pandemic. This tax credit has seen a lot of fraudulent claims and has ended up costing the government billions more than originally expected.

Writing from the nation
On Wednesday, President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his intention to nominate Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, as the new head of the Internal Revenue Service. This decision indicates his plan to replace the current IRS leader appointed by President Biden.
Following his loss in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long has promoted a tax credit introduced during the pandemic that has been plagued by fraudulent activity, resulting in the government spending billions more than anticipated. Lawmakers have attempted to terminate the tax credit, and the I.R.S. has temporarily halted the processing of claims in order to identify and eliminate false applications for the tax benefit.
During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about his efforts to assist businesses in applying for the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that he and his team have not had any of their claims denied by the tax agency. This credit, established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020, was designed to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees amid the economic challenges caused by the pandemic.
"We do not allow anyone to be sneaked through," he stated. "We thoroughly verify that they are eligible for this refund from the IRS, along with any applicable interest."
Donald Trump has announced his selection for a new leader of the IRS on his social media platform. This decision comes at a crucial time as the Biden administration has invested heavily in updating the agency and enhancing its efforts to collect taxes. The goal is to enhance customer service and clamp down on individuals who evade paying taxes.
President Biden selected Daniel Werfel, a previous management consultant and government employee with experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations, to head the reform of the I.R.S. Werfel’s term was scheduled to continue until 2027.
