On Wednesday, President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his intention to nominate Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, to be the new head of the Internal Revenue Service. This decision implies that he plans to remove the current IRS leader, who was appointed by Biden.

After losing a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long promoted a tax credit created during the pandemic which has been heavily abused and ended up costing the government much more than anticipated. Lawmakers have attempted to eliminate the tax credit, and the I.R.S. has temporarily halted processing claims in order to weed out fraudulent applications.

During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about how he assists businesses in claiming the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that he and his team have not had any claims denied by the tax agency. This program was established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020 to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees during the economic shutdown.

He stated that they do not allow anyone to pass through without meeting the qualifications for the refund from the I.R.S. They ensure that individuals are eligible to receive their own money back with interest.

President Trump made a new selection for a position in the I.R.S. at a critical time. The Biden administration has invested significant funds into updating the agency and strengthening its tax collection initiatives to enhance customer service and combat tax evasion.

President Biden appointed Daniel Werfel, who had experience as a management consultant and civil servant in various administrations, to head the I.R.S. reform efforts until 2027.
