Kelly Loeffler, a former Georgia senator and major donor to Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign, was selected by President-elect Trump to lead the Small Business Administration.

Mr. Trump expressed in a post on Truth Social that Kelly will use her business and Washington experience to help small businesses by reducing obstacles and creating opportunities for growth, innovation, and success. He stated that she will prioritize making sure the Small Business Administration is responsible to taxpayers by addressing issues like waste, fraud, and excessive regulations.

Ms. Loeffler was relatively new to public service when she was chosen by Gov. Brian Kemp to fill a Senate seat in Georgia in early 2020. She served until January 2021 when she lost in a special election to the Rev. Raphael Warnock. Towards the end of her time in the Senate, Ms. Loeffler was actively involved in supporting Mr. Trump’s attempt to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election.

During the first Trump administration, Ms. Loeffler experienced a notable change in her political views. Initially seen as a moderate Republican with a focus on business, her appointment to the Senate was seen as a strategy to broaden the appeal of the Georgia Republican Party.

However, Ms. Loeffler drastically shifted her political stance while in office, positioning herself as a strong advocate and unquestioning follower of Mr. Trump as she geared up for the 2020 election. Ultimately, Mr. Warnock emerged victorious in a runoff election, winning by a margin of two percentage points.

If approved by the Senate, Ms. Loeffler would be in charge of overseeing the agency that provides loans and disaster relief to small businesses nationwide. The Small Business Administration (S.B.A.) was instrumental during the Covid-19 crisis, distributing significant funds to support businesses in staying operational and retaining their staff.
