Kelly Loeffler, who was a major supporter of President Donald J. Trump’s 2024 campaign and previously served as a senator in Georgia, has been selected by President-elect Trump to lead the Small Business Administration.

In a post on Truth Social, Mr. Trump expressed that Kelly will use her business and Washington experience to help Small Businesses by cutting down on unnecessary bureaucracy and creating more opportunities for growth and innovation. He also mentioned that she will prioritize accountability to taxpayers by tackling issues like waste, fraud, and excessive regulations within the Small Business Administration.

Ms. Loeffler lacks significant experience in serving the public. She was chosen by Gov. Brian Kemp to fill a Senate seat in Georgia in early 2020 but was later defeated by Rev. Raphael Warnock in a special election in January 2021. Towards the end of her time in the Senate, Ms. Loeffler was actively involved in supporting Mr. Trump’s attempts to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election.

During the first Trump administration, Ms. Loeffler experienced a major shift in her political views. Initially considered a moderate Republican focused on business, her appointment to the Senate was seen as a way to attract a broader audience to the Georgia Republican Party.

Initially, Ms. Loeffler presented herself as a strong supporter of Mr. Trump as she sought to retain her seat in the 2020 election. However, she took a more extreme conservative stance during her time in office. Ultimately, Mr. Warnock won the runoff election by a margin of two percentage points.

Should she be approved by the Senate, Ms. Loeffler would be in charge of overseeing an agency that provides significant financial support to small businesses nationwide through loans and disaster assistance. The Small Business Administration (S.B.A.) was instrumental in distributing funds during the Covid-19 pandemic to help businesses survive and maintain payroll for their employees.
