Kelly Loeffler, a former Georgia senator and major donor to President-elect Donald J. Trump’s 2024 campaign, has been selected to lead the Small Business Administration.

In a post on Truth Social, Mr. Trump stated that Kelly will use her knowledge from the business world and Washington to help Small Businesses by cutting down on unnecessary regulations and creating opportunities for growth and innovation. He also mentioned that she will work on making sure the Small Business Administration is responsible to taxpayers by addressing issues such as waste, fraud, and excessive regulations.

Ms. Loeffler has limited experience working in government. She was selected by Gov. Brian Kemp to take over a Senate seat in Georgia in early 2020, but she was later defeated by the Rev. Raphael Warnock in a special election in January 2021. Towards the end of her time in the Senate, Ms. Loeffler was actively involved in supporting Mr. Trump’s attempts to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Ms. Loeffler experienced a major shift in her political beliefs during the initial Trump administration. Originally viewed as a moderate Republican focused on business, her appointment to the Senate was seen as a way to broaden the appeal of the Georgia Republican Party.

Ms. Loeffler shifted her political stance to align closely with Mr. Trump in order to secure support for her re-election in 2020. However, Mr. Warnock ended up winning the runoff election by a margin of two percentage points.

If approved by the Senate, Ms. Loeffler would be in charge of overseeing a government agency that provides loans and disaster aid to small businesses nationwide. The Small Business Administration played a crucial role in distributing billions of dollars during the Covid-19 pandemic to help businesses survive and keep their employees on payroll.
