Kelly Loeffler, a former Georgia senator and major donor to President-elect Donald J. Trump’s 2024 campaign, has been selected by Trump to lead the Small Business Administration.

Mr. Trump stated on Truth Social that Kelly will use her background in business and Washington to help small businesses by cutting down on unnecessary regulations and creating more opportunities for growth and innovation. She will also work to make sure the Small Business Administration is responsible to taxpayers by addressing issues like waste, fraud, and excessive regulations.

With minimal experience in public service, Ms. Loeffler was chosen by Gov. Brian Kemp to take over a vacant Senate seat in Georgia in early 2020. However, she lost in a special election to Rev. Raphael Warnock in January 2021. In her last days as a Senator, Ms. Loeffler was actively involved in supporting President Trump’s attempts to challenge the results of the 2020 election.

During the first Trump administration, Ms. Loeffler experienced a notable change in her political views. Initially considered a moderate Republican focusing on business interests, her appointment to the Senate was seen as a way to attract a larger audience to the Georgia Republican Party.

However, Ms. Loeffler drastically changed her political stance once in office, aligning herself closely with and publicly supporting Mr. Trump as she campaigned for re-election in 2020. Despite this, Mr. Warnock ended up winning the runoff election by a margin of two percentage points.

If approved by the Senate, Ms. Loeffler would be in charge of overseeing an agency that provides loans and disaster aid to small businesses nationwide. The Small Business Administration (S.B.A.) was crucial during the Covid-19 outbreak, distributing billions of dollars to support businesses in staying operational and retaining their employees.
