The Small Business Administration will be led by Kelly Loeffler, who was appointed by President-elect Donald J. Trump. Loeffler is a previous senator from Georgia and a major contributor to Trump’s 2024 campaign.

In a post on Truth Social, Mr. Trump expressed confidence in Kelly’s ability to use her business and Washington experience to help small businesses flourish by cutting unnecessary regulations and creating more opportunities for growth and innovation. He also mentioned that she will prioritize accountability at the SBA by cracking down on wasteful spending, fraud, and excessive regulations.

Ms. Loeffler lacks significant experience in working in government roles. She was chosen by Governor Brian Kemp to take over a Senate position in Georgia in early 2020, but lost in a special election to Rev. Raphael Warnock in January 2021. Towards the end of her time in the Senate, Ms. Loeffler was actively involved in supporting former President Trump’s attempts to challenge the results of the 2020 election.

During the first Trump administration, Ms. Loeffler experienced a notable shift in her political views. Initially seen as a moderate Republican focused on business, her appointment to the Senate was believed to be a strategy to attract a broader audience to the Georgia Republican Party.

However, Ms. Loeffler shifted her political stance significantly while in office, presenting herself as a strong advocate for and loyal follower of Mr. Trump as she geared up to campaign for her seat in the 2020 election. Ultimately, Mr. Warnock emerged victorious by a margin of two percentage points in a subsequent runoff election.

If approved by the Senate, Ms. Loeffler would be in charge of overseeing a government agency that provides loans and disaster assistance to small businesses nationwide. The Small Business Administration was instrumental during the Covid-19 crisis, distributing large amounts of funding to support businesses and their employees.
