Donald J. Trump, who is set to become the next President, selected Kelly Loeffler to lead the Small Business Administration. Loeffler, a former senator from Georgia and a significant donor to Trump’s 2024 campaign, was chosen for the role.

Mr. Trump stated on Truth Social that Kelly will use her business and Washington experience to help small businesses grow, innovate, and succeed by reducing unnecessary bureaucracy. She will prioritize making sure the Small Business Administration is responsible to taxpayers by addressing issues like waste, fraud, and excessive regulations.

Ms. Loeffler does not have much background in working in government. She was chosen by Gov. Brian Kemp to take over a Senate position in Georgia in early 2020, but she lost in a special election to Rev. Raphael Warnock in January 2021. Towards the end of her time in the Senate, Ms. Loeffler was actively involved in supporting former President Trump’s attempts to challenge the results of the 2020 election.

During the first Trump administration, Ms. Loeffler went through a major political change. She was originally considered a moderate, business-focused Republican when she was chosen for the Senate. This decision was made in hopes of making the Georgia Republican Party more attractive to a larger audience.

However, Ms. Loeffler shifted her political stance significantly while in office, aligning herself closely with Mr. Trump in order to secure her position in the 2020 election. Ultimately, Mr. Warnock emerged victorious with a two percentage point lead in the runoff election.

If approved by the Senate, Ms. Loeffler would oversee an organization that provides loans and disaster aid to small businesses nationwide. The Small Business Administration played a crucial role during the Covid-19 pandemic by distributing billions of dollars to support businesses in staying operational and paying their workers.
