Reporting live from the
Donald J. Trump, who will soon be inaugurated as President, announced his intention to appoint Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, to head the Internal Revenue Service. This decision means that Trump plans to dismiss the current leader of the IRS, who was appointed by Biden.
Following his defeat in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long has promoted a tax credit introduced during the pandemic that has been plagued by fraudulent activity, leading to higher costs for the government than initially anticipated. Lawmakers have taken steps to eliminate the tax credit, with the I.R.S. temporarily halting the processing of claims to identify and reject false applications.
During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about how he assisted businesses in claiming the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that neither he nor his colleagues had experienced any denials from the tax agency for these claims. The program, established by Congress and Mr. Trump in 2020, was designed to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees during the economic shutdown as part of a larger stimulus bill.
He stated that they do not secretly help anyone get the refund, but rather ensure that they legitimately qualify for it from the IRS with added interest.
President Trump made a significant decision to appoint a new leader to the I.R.S., which would bring about significant changes during a crucial time. The Biden administration has invested a substantial amount of money in updating the agency and enhancing its tax collection methods to enhance customer service and combat tax evasion.
President Biden appointed Daniel Werfel, a former consultant and government employee with experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations, to head the restructuring of the I.R.S in 2022. Werfel’s term was expected to continue until 2027.
