President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his intention to appoint Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, as the new head of the Internal Revenue Service. This decision also indicates his plans to remove the current leader of the IRS, who was appointed by President Biden.
Following his defeat in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long has promoted a tax credit introduced during the pandemic that has been plagued by fraudulent activity, leading to a significantly higher cost to the government than originally anticipated. Lawmakers have attempted to eliminate the tax credit, and the I.R.S. has halted the processing of claims temporarily to identify and reject false applications for the tax break.
During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about how he assists businesses in claiming the Employee Retention Tax Credit. He mentioned that he and his team have not had any of their claims denied by the tax agency so far. This credit was established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020 as a part of a stimulus package to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees despite the economic shutdown.
According to him, they do not try to deceive anyone in order to obtain the refund from the IRS. They make sure that the individuals actually qualify for the refund and are entitled to receive it along with any interest owed.
Donald Trump announced his selection for a key position in the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) through his social media platform, which could potentially bring significant changes to the organization. The Biden administration has invested a considerable amount of money in updating the IRS and increasing its efforts to collect taxes, aiming to enhance customer service and combat tax evasion.
President Biden selected Daniel Werfel in 2022 to head the reform of the I.R.S. Werfel, a former management consultant and civil servant with experience in both Democratic and Republican governments, was appointed to serve until 2027.
