Former Missouri congressman Billy Long has been chosen by Trump to lead the IRS. Long, who served six terms in Congress, has been assisting businesses in claiming a tax credit meant for pandemic relief. However, this tax credit has been plagued with fraud and has ended up costing the government billions more than originally expected.

On Wednesday, President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his intention to nominate Billy Long, a former congressman from Missouri, to be in charge of the Internal Revenue Service. This decision indicates his plan to remove the current leader of the IRS, who was appointed by President Biden.

Following his loss in a Senate primary in 2022, Mr. Long has been promoting a tax credit introduced during the pandemic that has been plagued by fraudulent claims, resulting in the government spending billions more than anticipated. Lawmakers have attempted to eliminate the tax credit, and the I.R.S. has temporarily halted processing claims in order to identify and reject false applications.

During a podcast interview in 2023, Mr. Long talked about how he and his team have successfully helped businesses take advantage of the Employee Retention Tax Credit without any rejections from the tax agency. This program was established by Congress and former President Trump in 2020 to encourage businesses to continue paying their employees during the economic slowdown caused by the pandemic.

"We don’t try to deceive or cheat anyone," he mentioned. "We ensure that they truly meet the requirements for this refund of their own money from the I.R.S., along with interest."

President Trump made a new selection for a position in the IRS via his social media platform, which could have a significant impact at a crucial time. The Biden administration has invested substantial funds in updating the agency and strengthening its tax enforcement activities to enhance customer service and combat tax evasion.

President Biden appointed Daniel Werfel, a former management consultant and civil servant with experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations, to head the reform of the IRS in 2022. Werfel’s term was expected to continue until 2027.
