President-elect Donald J. Trump has appointed a well-known conservative figure from Silicon Valley to assist in managing American technology policy.

The president-elect announced on social media that David Sacks, a venture capitalist and former executive at PayPal, will be appointed as the "White House A.I. and Crypto Czar." Sacks, who is known for launching a successful podcast, is also a close associate of Elon Musk. Over the past year, Sacks has been encouraging Musk to become more involved in Republican politics.

The new position being created suggests that the Trump administration plans to have a more relaxed approach towards regulating technology and cryptocurrencies, especially since they have increased in value since Trump’s election and he has personal business interests in them. Mr. Sacks, who heads a venture capital firm named Craft Ventures, has advocated for more lenient policies on both cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence.

During the Trump transition, Mr. Sacks successfully argued for the consolidation of oversight for artificial intelligence and crypto under one person, himself. Other suggestions were made to have separate individuals oversee each area, but ultimately Mr. Sacks was selected for the joint role.

"David has been appointed to lead the policy efforts for Artificial Intelligence and Cryptocurrency within the Administration, as these are two important areas for American competitiveness in the future," stated Mr. Trump during a speech on Thursday. "David’s main goal will be to ensure that America becomes the top global leader in both of these fields."

Mr. Sacks is not working full time, according to his company. He mentioned to friends that he didn’t want a formal position because it would mean stepping down from his role managing his venture capital fund, as reported by The New York Times. Recently, Mr. Sacks revealed a new round of funding for his start-up, which was led by his company.
